Many clients are confused about what exactly is a domain name and how it's different from your website. I like to think of it this way:
Think of the piece of land you own as your domain name. It's in your name and you can do whatever you want with it.
You can build a house on it and live there for 5 years. That's like your first website.
Then you outgrow that house and decide to build a new one. That's like your second website.
Then you realize you wished you added that wrap around porch so you renovate. That's your third website.
The point is, anything can be built on your domain so you want to make sure you aren't asking someone else to handle to purchasing and maintenance.
Likewise, since you website is like a house, it can be moved to any other piece of land (domain) you have access to.
